The History of Ariakas Dragonspur
Ariakas was the first of three children born to Zaasarihel and Malela Dragonspur. His father was a well-known Ranger, that served for the elves in the High Forest of Toril and his mother was a practitioner of the magic arts. Both of his parents taught him well at both of their trades, to make him a perfectly self-sufficient combatant.
At the age of one hundred and fifty seasons, Ariakas felt a growing need to travel the world over and seek adventure in far off lands. His parents perfectly agreed with his decision, knowing that it was always a phase that was a part of youth. Ariakas gathered his most prized belongings and headed off to seek his fortune, but before he left, his parents presented him with a suit of finely crafted Elven chain mail armor, which they had been saving for him when the day had come when he would leave to become a great adventurer.
Ariakas did little adventuring before he came across a great elven Sabremage by the name of Singe Dorrell. Singe specialized in the art of pyromancy. After watching Singe in an awe inspiring duel of 'Spell Swordplay', Ariakas soon became engulfed in the idea of becoming a Sabremage and eventually convinced Singe that he must be taught this new, to his knowledge, art. Singe finally agreed to take him in as an apprentice.
Ariakas was a very good student; always trying his best to learn everything he could as quickly as possible. As part of the Sabremage tradition, Ariakas had to construct a sheath of exquisite craftsmanship to hold his special sword. The sword will basically work similar to a spell book, having his spells engraved upon it in rune form. Also, as part of his Sabremage training, Ariakas was given the quest of finding a magical Clorin Stone, which is used as a sharpening tool to aid in re-imbuing energy in order to cast spells from his Spell Sword. (See 'The Quest for the Clorin Stone' for details.) After completing his quest, Ariakas was given the gift of a magical sword of elven-make, known as 'Orc Cleaver' by his mentor Singe, which became his spell sword.
In his young age, Ariakas had a very bad tendency to jump at any chance to get precious jewels, coins, etc., whenever possible. It is kind of a 'wealthlust', which friends would jokingly call 'Ariakasism'. He seemed to act without common sense or thought whenever this would occur. He has made many grave mistakes when this lust would engross him, which some could of very well have cost him his life.
For approximately twenty-five seasons, or so, Ariakas had decided to spend his time either studying with Singe, his mentor, or visiting with his parents and other relatives, participating in elvish events, which he seems to enjoy very much. At that time, Ariakas had decided to do this since his near fatal incident with an Iron Golem when he was off adventuring with Otnay and Gemalee. This time period he used for recovery after he had received a broken back from the incident with the golem. In short, he had thought the golem was just a statue, which came to life as he was trying to pick out its gemstone eyes. The golem grabbed him by his midsection and tossed him into a stone pillar, thus snapping his back. Otnay and Gemalee subdued the golem and graciously took him back to his elven village to be cared after. With strong elven magic and many prayers to his patron deity, Corellos Larethian, Ariakas was healed in a short period of time. As a reminder of the incident, Ariakas was left with great scars upon his back. The great oracles of his village said that Corellos Larethian left the marks to humble Ariakas and hopefully extinguish his lack of thought when the lust for jewels and coins overtook his thoughts. Since this time, Ariakas has been a very devout worshipper of his deity, trying to get back in the good graces of his ever-watching Lord. Since the incident, Ariakas hasn't had a single episode.
Drawing near to the end of the twenty-five-season span, Ariakas began to miss the excitement of travel and decided that it was time to pack up and hit the road for another round of the adventuring life, but first he had to make another stop. Apparently, he had lost his original Clorin Stone and needed to visit the hidden caves to obtain another. Unfortunately, this next visit wasn't so fortunate. Upon gaining access to the entrance of the cavern, Ariakas had an eerie feeling; one which felt as if he were being watched the entire time. Ariakas shrugged off the feeling and continued anyway, remembering how easily his original Clorin Stone was gained. The cavern hadn't changed since the last time Ariakas had been inside. He followed the same path, which led him exactly to the pile of stones. Upon picking up a stone, Ariakas heard a deep growling voice spittle the words, "Those…who…disturb…the…sacred…stones…will…hearken…irrevocable…doom!" The snarl erupted into a sepulchral tremor, moving directly toward Ariakas, coming from the same tunnel as the entrance. He quickly glanced around and noticed a sliver of daylight protruding through the darkness from a side tunnel beyond the pile of stones. Ariakas began to run toward the small ember of light coming from the distant passage. The light grew the further he ventured into the channel, but so did the haunting quake, causing Ariakas to erupt into an all-out sprint. Ariakas ran in terror as doom clawed at his backside. The chase seemed like eternity as Ariakas drew closer to his exit. Within one stride away, but a second too late, he noticed that the light wasn't exactly what he had thought it seemed. It was a different sort of glow, something resembling daylight, but magical in essence. He tried with all of his agility to stop his flow of momentum, but the second his leg touched the radiance he was absorbed inward. Darkness enveloped Ariakas.
Hearing the chirping of birds and the crackling of leaves in the distance, Ariakas awoke with a slight thumping in his head, feeling as if he had downed quite a few pints of ale the night before. He sat up, noticing that he had been sprawled out in a pit of ash. He dizzily stood up and scanned his surroundings. Ariakas saw, next to where he was lying, a mysterious, giant onyx oboleth standing in the center of a burnt section of forest. After searching around and not really finding anything but a set of humanoid tracks, Ariakas decided to follow them to see where they led. The tracks led straight into a nearby forest. Not knowing exactly where he was and still feeling a bit dazed, Ariakas decided to follow the tracks into the forest. The forest looked unfamiliar in every aspect from the forests near his home. Ariakas thought to himself, "Where could I be?"
After a few days of walking, the tracks led Ariakas to a semi-hidden, elven-looking village. He glanced around at the entrance, looking for any familiar distinctions, and decided to enter. A few dozen individuals, with grey-elven features, approached with arrows knocked in their bows. Ariakas introduced himself and described his predicament. Within moments after seeing Ariakas's elven heritage, a curious, grey elf with elderly features was brought to speak with Ariakas. The elf introduced himself as Koress Tiaalam, the elder of the village, and asked for Ariakas to describe in more detail of his dilemma. After hearing the tale, the elder offered Ariakas a warm meal and glass of mead, while he took time to think upon this strange account.
After sunset, the elder approached Ariakas saying, "I have prayed and consulted the wisdom of Corellos Larethian. I feel that your presence within our villages has special meaning. Please take stay with us while you gather your strength and let us welcome you to the Stone Forest on the continent of Mikhal."
Ariakas spent the next few years learning about Mikhal and its dwellers from the Stone Forest elves as well as their traditions and history. They made him feel as if he were one of their own. He tried his best to go out of his way to show his appreciation for their hospitality and kindness. Eventually, Ariakas began to journey farther and farther away from the Stone Forest. His elven brethren guided some of the treks and some were alone. The elders felt that this would be good for Ariakas to experience all of Mikhal's wonders, as they may lead him on his path home. Soon, seasons pasted between each visit to the Stone Forest, but Ariakas always made it a habit to stop by whenever he was near or at least sent word of his well doings.
During this time, he met and journeyed with the mighty Jacara, Barthalanthas Amelereth, the great bard Percival Theordor, the infamous Gaspar Fradn, among others. They stayed together until Ariakas felt a calling to focus his attention on finding his path home. He traveled the entire continent of Mikhal, searching every nook and cranny for clues, all of which led him nowhere. It wasn't until his recent re-acquaintance with the ever-resurrected Jacara and his new band of curse breakers that he was able to find a single clue. The clue, a second Clorin Stone, was his first ray of hope to finding his way home!
