Comes for the Vale of Arryn
La Tey comes from the Scorpion Clan in the Vale of Arryn. As he grew up, he was trained in the use of the "Sword in Staff" that all the great warriors of the clan used. When he was 16, he was part of a raid on the Spider Clan from a nearby valley. During the raid, La Tey proved his skill with the "Sword in Staff". He wounded several of the fighters from the Lion Clan and was able to grab a young girl as a slave for his clan.
The leader of the clan was impressed by La Tey's skill that he awarded the slave girl to La Tey. The leaders son was upset with the gift to La Tey that he challenged La Tey to a duel over the slave. La Tey agreed to the duel only if they used the staff. The other warrior agreed and they met at the center of the clan's home and began the fight. La Tey quickly proved that he was the better fighter and knocked down the leader's son. The warrior could not take the humiliation of losing the fight and tried to attack La Tey from behind. The other clan members shouted a warning and La Tey turned just in time to strike the other with his staff. The blow was hard enough to knock the out and as he fell, his head hit a rock, killing him.
The leader was angry at La Tey for killing his son but because La Tey was the one that had been challenged, he could not have him killed as he wanted so he exiled La Tey instead. Most of the other warriors of the clan spoke out in La Tey's defense but the leader would not listen to their advice.
With the well wishes from most of the warriors of the clan, La Tey set off to find a new place for himself. Some of the older warriors told La Tey that they would continue to argue his case before the people and they hoped that someday La Tey could return to the People of the Scorpion.
La Tey was told by the shaman of the Serpent Clan that he was the child of the Phoenix. If La Tey could find and return to the Hand of God with the feather of a Phoenix, he would become the leader of a new Clan called the Phoenix Clan. The shaman also told La Tey that he would find the feather in a land far to the north of their island. La Tey took a boat to the main land. Once there, La Tey spent two moons as the body guard of a merchant. La Tey then headed north to the city of Greyhawk.
La Tey has spent several years wandering the world looking for the feather he is supposed to find. He heard many rumors that the Phoenix was seen a few miles away or in the next town. Every time, La Tey found that the rumors were just that, rumors. After all this time of searching and selling his sword, La Tey decided to return to Greyhawk. Joining a merchant headed toward the city, La Tey singed on as a guard for the convoy. There was no trouble as they headed into the city. When they reached the city, the merchant paid La Tey the gold he was promised. La Tey then went to the mercenaries guild hall and signed the rolls to see if there might be work for him. Afterwards, he checked into the Green Dragon Inn and tried to relax.
As La Tey sat in the Inn, he received word that the Phoenix feather would be found in a small city to the south of Greyhawk, near the desert. La Tey gathered his belongings and set out again on his quest.
