Kaija was born the sixth girl in a large family living on the southwestern portion of Hybernia. Her family were poor farmers working a small farm near the Temple of Kossuth. When Kaija was a year old, her father took her to the Temple to get the blessing of Kossuth for his daughter. As the preistest was performing the blessing, the Goddess appeared and said that Kaija was called to enter the temple and to learn to become a 'Firewalker'. Kaija's father was surprised by the appearance of the Goddess, and even more that his somewhat slow daughter would become one of the mythical 'Firewalkers'. Being a pragmatic man, he realized that if Kaija went to the temple he would have more food for the rest of his children. He agreed to allow the Temple of Kossuth to raise Kaija as a priestess within the temple.
As Kaija grew and learned within the temple, fires seemed to ignite whenever she became angry or frustrated. The priestess realized that Kossuth had touched this small child in a special way. Changing the way Kaija was taught about the temple helped Kaija control her angry and frustration, thereby, diminishing the numbers of fires.
When Kaija reached her sixteenth summer, she had a vision of herself traveling southeast. Kaija was following a large column of fire. Kaija walked through forests, over mountains, and through deserts. After seeing herself floating over a large body of water, Kaija watched the column of fire kneel before a large bird of prey that had landed next to a river. As Kaija told this to the priestess, they agreed that the Goddess Kossuth was telling Kaija that she must travel to the south east. When Kaija told them about the fire kneeling before the bird of prey, the priestess told Kaija that she must find the place where the bird landed. Having reached that place, the Goddess would tell Kaija what she should do then.
Kaija was afraid to leave the temple but the head priestess told Kaija that if she did not do as the Goddess asked, the Goddess would take her blessing from Kaija. She would not be able to find a husband, have children or even to find a place to live. The priestess told Kaija the the Goddess would not ask this of her if the Goddess did not think that Kaija could do it. After hearing this, Kaija began to prepare for the journey.
As Kaija prepared, she was again given a vision. This vision was different from the last in that Kaija was shown a piece of wood, bent and shaped in a strange manner. Keeping this vision to herself, she continued with her preparations.
Kaija left the temple just after the snows began to melt in the spring of her seventeenth year. As she traveled, she looked for and found a piece of wood that looked like the shape of the wood in her vision. Kaija began to shape and refine the wood until it matched her vision perfectly. After she had made it, she did not know what to do with it next.
At night, the Goddess appeared in Kaija's fire and told her that she must learn to throw the 'boomerang' in order to catch food and to harm her enemys. So, each day that she traveled, Kaija practiced with the boomerang. Soon she was able to hit what she aimed at and was able to eat a much better diet of food.
As Kaija approached a large river, she began to run into more people and towns. Kaija found the campsite of a small caravan. Asking if she could share their fire for the night, at first the leader of the caravan was reluctant to allow a stranger within his camp. Speaking with the leader, Kaija was able to persuade him that she was no threat. Kaija told the leader that she could use the power of the Goddess Kossuth to help him and his men if he would allow her to rest the night in their camp.
As Kaija and the men of the caravan talked during and after dinner, Kaija learned of a city far to the southeast called 'Greyhawk'. That night, as she slept, the Goddess came to Kaija and told her that 'Greyhawk' was her destination. This revelation woke Kaija with a start. As she sat up near the fire, she heard something moving outside the range of the firelight. Not wanting to be ambushed now, Kaija caused the fire to suddenly grow in size and reviled a small group of gnome trying to sneak up to the camp.
Losing her temper at this attack, Kaija called on the power of Kossuth and loosed a flame from her hand to attack the gnomes. As they scattered and tried to get away, Kaija threw her boomerang at the apparent leader of the pack. When the boomerang struck him, he fell to the ground. Before he could get up, Kaija ran forward and killed him with her staff.
Peering out into the night, Kaija cursed the rest of the pack. Returning to the fire, Kaija was surprised to see that the men of the camp where just beginning to realize that they had been attacked. The leader of the caravan realized that the men he had put on sentry duty had fallen asleep and if Kaija had not awaken at that moment, he and his men would have been killed or lost their cargo, which was worse than being killed.
The leader was so impressed by Kaija's use of magic to aid him and his men that he offered Kaija to escort her to the next city. Now that she had a destination, Kaija agreed to aid the caravan for as long as she was with them. To lighten the minds of the men, Kaija would dance for the men after they had eaten. To ease their scrapes and cuts, Kaija would use her magic to heal them. As she came closer to Greyhawk, Kaija became more and more convinced that soon she would begin to fulfill her destiny. So, at the beginning of her nineteenth year, Kaija entered the gates of Greyhawk and into her future.
Kiaja travelled around the Domain of Greyhalk and to the lands to the west with a group of fellow travelers. As she traveled, she learned many things and grew as a person and the Chosen of Kossuth. She helped the Elves as they fled north, away from the Sword Rulers.
Upon reaching the Emerald Forest, Kaija aided the Elves in setting up their new kingdom. With the aid of the Goddess, Kaija helped open the doorway to the Elves heaven.
After that, Kaija returned to the Temple of Kossuth. The Abbotess and the rest of the priesttess's welcomed Kaija back into their lives. The Abbotess watched Kaija for some time, wondering if she really could adjust to the life at the Temple.
At first, Kaija had some trouble adjusting to the pace of life at the Temple. Soon, however, Kaija adjusted as if nothing had happened to her. The abbotess was pleased to see Kaija return to her old self once more.
After a couple of seasons, the Abbotess called Kaija into her office. The Abbotess told Kaija that she was pleased by how quickly Kaija re-embraced the life at the Temple. She told Kaija that she was thinking that Kaija might be able to become the Abbotess one day. Kaija was surprised by this confession from the Abbotess. Kaija told the Abbotess that she was not worthy to accept the honor. The Abbotess laughed at Kaija's confession. She told Kaija that anyone who really deserved the job was sure that they were not worthy, even herself. So, the Abbotess began to groom Kaija to take her place one day. Kaija worked harder each day to become better at running the Temple
After several seasons, while praying in the Temple, Kaija suddenly found herself floating above the world. Kaija marveled at the sight of the world spread out before her. She thought to herself that this must be the way the Goddess saw the world.
As Kaija watched the land, she noticed a snall spot of blackness within it. As she watched it, ti began to send out tendrils across the land. One touched a city to the south and the blackness began to grow within the city. Kaija felt anger, horror, and great sadness at the blackness.
Kaija then fell towards a city at the north of a great bay. Landing on the docks of the city, Kaija saw a boat just docking. On the boat she saw several people. There was an older human male and female. They were surrounded by a cloak of blackness. She saw a human male with a glow surrounding his head. With him was a elven female with a large dog. Kaija also was a elven female with a slight blackness on her hands. There were several other people but they did not stand out a much as the others.
When Kaija awoke, she was in her bedroom with several preistess's stand around her bed. When they saw she was awake, the called for the Abbotess. Asking what happened, Kaija was told that she had called out and collapsed in the Temple three days ago.
When the Abbotess arrived, Kaija told her every thing about her vision. When Kaija finished, the Abbotess looked sad. She told Kaija that the Goddess was calling on Kaija to travel south to find out what the blackness was. Kaija cried to the Abbotess that she did not want to leave the Temple again. The Abbotess told Kaija that what she wanted did not matter, the Goddess needed her more than the Temple did.
Holding back her tears, Kaija once again set out to the south. Traveling fast, Kaija quickly found the city of her vision. Kaija was scared watching teh people of her vision walking down the gangplank of the boat. Putting her fear aside, Kaija moved toward the people.
