The further adventures of Artie…
Artie in Greyhawlk on or about Harvester 7, cy 595
With the gang gone to some pointless endeavor to Renalse via the south this gives me the chance to work toward my new business of healing. People are starting to get the word about my healing ways and I am getting several visits per week at the Blue Bolt Inn. Problem is that the pay isn’t great and the Inn charges more them I’m making. So, I have decided that the time has come to get my own shop. A trip to the collector’s office reveals several empty storefronts about town. After looking at them the one in the Rivers Quarter might serve me best and I could even live in the apartment above.
Its only 3 rooms on the main floor and 3 on the second but it will work just fine. I will keep the Mages College as a place to keep my important things hidden. I am going to need some help so I contacted Alluna using my powers and asked her to meet me at the Blue Bolt one night for dinner. After small talk was done I told her about my need of a woman to assist me. Alluna suggested looking around the outskirts or the great burn, that area has many people in need and could probably fine who I’m looking for there. Alluna looked a bit more uneasy then normal, I asked about this and as usual she claimed it was nothing. I offered my services to her and her guild at a discount. She said that might work from time to time and suggested they use a password to let me know they were to get a discount. The password is (ladybug). Alluna did let on that she might need to be moving on in the near future but things around here are ever fluid.
Over the next few days I visited the area surrounding the great burn, many there were beyond poor. I noticed a couple of small tent villages and explored them. Mostly a place for the poor to gather. I came across several people laying in beddings of cloth and rags and they seemed to have bandages adorning different parts of their bodies. Not seeing anyone around I asked who or where they were getting their care. One man said that Val does what she can to patch up those in need when she can. She was not present today but I was told she would come and go between the different areas seeing to those in need. From the looks of it she seemed to have some skill but not the means. I would need to return to speak with her.
I returned over the next two days until she was pointed out to me as she was tearing strips from clean rags to change the dressing on a gentleman who seemed to have a badly broken arm. Val looked to be in her mid to late 30’s. I asked if I could assist her and introduced myself. I followed and helped her for about a span and when she was done asked her if I could offer her a meal in exchange for listening to an offer I had for her. Val accepted and said she only had a little while before she had to get back to her son who she cares for.
Over lunch I explained what I was trying to accomplish with my work and that I was looking for an assistant and from what I seen she would be perfect. She politely declined and thanked me for the meal. I asked what it would take for her to join me. She again declined and said that there would be no way for her to take this job for she was the only one to care for her son fulltime. I asked how old the boy was and that we could work something out that she could bring him to work. She stopped me and said that I did not understand, her son, 24 years of age, was unable to move his body at all. He was carpenter and while working on the ceiling of the River Quarter Mission his scaffolding collapsed and he fell. This has happened during the last Growfest and she feared he will never get better. Because of this situation, the mission is letting Val and her son stay there as long as she helps the mission twice per week aiding those in need in the tent village.
It does not take long for Artie to see what had to be done, I hast if I could have a look at her son and that I might see a way to help heal her son that the mission’s priest might have missed. Val agrees and Artie accompanies her back to the mission. Val introduces Artie to Thomas her son. Artie pulls back his covers and starts looking over Thomas’ entire body, pressing and poking and feeling and rubbing all the while explaining to Val what he was doing and why.
After finishing a complete diagnostic for Thomas, Artie said there was a small break in the bone that make up the lower back and that swelling had damaged the nerves that signal the brain to move the different parts of the body. I took Val by the hands and told her I could fix her sons problems. She said that she could not afford whatever the cost would be. I stopped her and said that I will help both of them at no cost and maybe they will help me out in return but that would not be necessary if did not want to.
Artie said this is going to take the rest of the day and a few spans into the evening to complete, I would need to be alone and undisturbed during the process. She agreed and left Artie to his work. Artie made himself comfortable and first using a gold coin tied to a piece of string waving it back and forth in front of Thomas’ eyes speaking soft yet commanding words, he put Thomas in a sleep trance. Artie then began the healing process as he went into a trance where in his mind he could see the disconnect of bone and nerve and blood vessels and using his mind began repairing the injuries one by one.
It was late into the evening when Artie came looking for Val and found her asleep at a table in the main hall. He gently woke her and said he was done. She went to see her son, Artie explained that he had put him into a deep sleep and he would need to stay that way until the morning. I also would need to stay the night for I am very tired and need to be here first thing in the morning anyway. Val found me a padded mat to spend the night on. Artie would first rejuvenate for a few spans before turning in himself.
Morning came as it always did, it was a sunny day, it was going to be a good day. Artie went back to Thomas’ room and sleeping next to him on the floor all night. Without waking Val, he dismissed the trance he put Thomas in the day before. Thomas began to stir about in the bed as if waking from a long slumber.
Artie left the room and waited back in the main room of the mission. After about a half a span or so there was the sounds of rejoicing coming from the back room. Into the main room came Val helping and unsure Thomas to regain his balance. Seeing Artie, she immediately ran over to Artie and gave him a big strong hug, something Artie has not felt in a very long time. I see you approve of your sons condition this morning Val, asked Artie. With a very big smile on her face she said she very much approved.
Artie took them both to the Blue Bolt Inn for breakfast and Thomas ate like it had been a long time since he filled his belly. Artie said he would like her to consider the offer he made and would give her a few days to think on it. He asked her to come back to this inn and let him know what her decision would be. After breakfast, they parted ways.
Artie decided to just relax today so he was hanging out in the main room of the inn. Around midday both Val and Thomas came back to the Blue Bolt, seeing Artie sitting at a table they came right to him. Artie greeted them and asked them to please sit. Val said that they were thrown out of the mission and they accused Thomas of faking his injuries so they could have a place to stay for free. Artie could see how this would have went down. I understand, he said, this is just how some people are, they just don’t understand how my powers work. Do you have anywhere to go? No said Val, ever since Thomas was hurt we had no way to pay the bills. Here, let me put you up here in the Blue Bolt for a few days until you can get back on your feet. Go get your things. Val said they could not accept this on top of what Artie has already done for them. Artie insisted! Val said they had nothing else for she had to sell everything else to pay for food and back rent due on their old place. Artie went over to the inn keeper and bought them a room, he gave the key to Val and said your room, go to it and relax, everything will get better from this point on.
The next day while Artie was eating breakfast, Val came down and asked to sit with Artie, he motioned at a chair and she sat. She asked why he was doing all of this for strangers and for no money. Artie said because it is the right thing to do, because I can, and because I think I was meant to find you to work with me.
Enough reasons? Yes, she stated and I agree to help you with your endeavors whatever they may be. I am pleased to hear that, after breakfast I will show you the new place I just bought, it needs a bit of work but I think it’s the right spot for me.
After looking about at the old building on Houseshoe Road in the River Quarter, Val shook Arties hand and said my full name is Vallentessa Corellas. My full name is Artz Vom Gott but please only call me Artie. Val said my son can fix and repair most of what this place needs. I said that would be great, he is hired. Val said there is no cost for the labor, it’s the right thing to do.
After about a week the upstairs was finished, Artie agreed to let them stay here in one of the rooms in exchange for cooking cleaning and house hold choirs, they agreed. After another week, the downstairs was finished and ready for business. Artie had new flyers made to direct people to his new location, also posting in and around the docks hoping to get business from nautical injuries as well. With the help of a women’s touch the main room and
two patient rooms were decorated with candles and bolts of soft clothes on the walls and even a pair of birds in a cage. The sign on the front of the building says the word Healing in Common, Stone Elf, Mannis Mt Dwarf.
When the first patient walked in he was met by Val and she would ask the services requested, take the patient to a room and say that the Chiurgeon will be right with you.
In the next several weeks’ business started picking up, Artie even picked up a contract to see to the star players of the Blood Bowl Games.
