If it's alright with Cob, I'm making this thread so that everyone can ask me questions about 5th Edition D&D that they may have. If it'd be easier, you can also email me at leeleroux52@gmail.com.

Do you declare actions or do you get to decide when your turn comes up?

You have your whole turn to think about what you want to do, allowing you to compensate for anything that changes your plans.

So there is no way to interrupt a spell caster because when their turn comes up they just pick not to cast a spell? When a spellcaster casts a spell, another spellcaster could use their reaction to cast Counterspell if they're able. Otherwise, the wizard can cast the spell whether they get hit or not. The exchange you get for that is that many spells have a concentration period, which means you must concentrate on this spell to maintain it. This means you cannot cast any spell with the concentration feature, and if you take damage, you have to make a Concentration check, which is a Constitution check where the DC is the amount of damage you took halved, unless that number would be below 10, in which case 10 is the DC.
