There are legends told in the wilds around Greyhawk. Weary travellers spin tales around the campfire about the strange sounds in the night. That they are the call of the nature spirit that protects these forests, punishing would-be poachers and clear-cutters. The reality, however, is far stranger.
The calls in the dark of night are not that of a nature spirit, nor that of a savage beast. They are, in fact, the call of a man. His name is Farin and he is known by the creatures of the forest as their protector. He, along with his best friend (a squirrel named Albert, (Al for short.)), have made their part of the woods safe for all of Beory's children. Farin, along with Al and some of the local mockingbirds, make the strange calls in the night to ward off the anyone who would do harm to their realm. However, things were not always so tranquil in these woods
Not long ago, there was a time that hunters and woodsman ravaged this bastion of natural beauty. Hunters would kill indiscriminately, leaving bloody carcasses strewn across the forest floor after they had taken the most prized parts to sell in Greyhawk. Woodsman would chop down any tree in their way, even the young saplings. When Farin arrived in this forest, he was but a babe, left to die by his cruel father after his mothers death. The animals, sensing Farin's gentle soul, hid him and raised him as their own. The goddess Beory took notice of the animals' love for the boy and decided to show her appreciation for the boy who had become a part of her domain. She blessed him with the knowledge of the common tongue as well as the ability to use powers in her name. She also bestowed upon him a small, golden oak branch through which Farin would channel these powers. Within a few years, Farin had rid the woods of the men who had harmed it and began restoring it to its former glory.
Now, however, the woods are protected by his legend and he (as he has little to do anymore) has begun to pine for adventure. In order to take his mind off such things, he takes trips into Greyhawk to remind himself of his disgust for cities as well as to sell his Ale to a tavern within the city walls...
