The Emerald Elves or Emeraukil in their native tongue live in the northernmost region of the continent of Mikhal. The Emerald High King Solath sits atop his throne of verdigris bronze in the highest branches of the great elven city of Featherfall The city looks over his kingdom, seeing above the many tree houses and smaller tree cities that dot his northern realm. His dominion extends to both the east and western shores that lie north of the Bythat Drachard or World River in the southern tongue.
Even to the northernmost lands where ice and snow rule the landscape for most if not all of the year and where the creatures that live their have not heard nor speak of elves, only Solath can claim he is the ruler and protector of this vast area. Though there are no trees so far north the wood elves keep watch for encroaching orcs, gnolls, and bird-men, called aaracockra.
The Emerald Court is comprised of five noble houses. Though all elves are treated with respect and equality irrespective of gender, class, or career choice, the noble houses are of the line of High Kings since time immemorial. There has been very little political motivation to change one's station since the elves live in a perpetual state of socialism. Everyone who can do something does, and those who can't are taken care of until they pass on to Arvandor. Even infirmities brought on by old age are seen as a sign of wisdom for having lived so long, so goes the old saying "only the unwise die before they must". Wealth is not seen as power nor is it seen as an achievement. Elves do not lust for gold and treasures. Their true love is the arts. Even an architect or a carpenter is seen as an artist. Community members help each other with everything from rearing children to building to agriculture to the soldiery. Occasionally someone may be chosen by fate or circumstance to do something beyond living an idyllic elven life of learning, helping, and loving.
One such elf is a prince of the second house. He is married to the king's sister. In the southern kingdoms he is known as Prince B. In the thieves cant he is referred to as "the maestro". In the circle of mages throughout the continent he is known for his relentless pursuit of all things magical. He is wanted by the law of Greyhawk City. He is a hero.
With that being said this elf has been known to make King Solath cringe and lose his temper. Unfortunately for him, before he was king he was saved by Prince B. from being eaten by Blackout, a draon who lives on the west coast south of the Emerald Kingdom. Solath has never forgotten and neither has Prince B. The prince comes and goes as he wishes, whenever he wants to, and despite a look of concern from Shalere his wife, he is allowed this freedom because he has earned it.
Until now. Bart looked at the letter with the court's mark and knew if this was a true missive from the High Court of the Elven King he would need to start packing and preparing for a journey. "Finally," he thought. "This better be good."
